Victim in Newport News shooting dies from injuries

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A victim died Monday after a shooting last week in Newport News.

Police say emergency communications received a call around 9:30 p.m. Friday reporting gunshots heard in the area of the 1100 block of Garden Drive.

Officers arrived on scene and found 34-year-old Charles Levar Sharpe, of the 1000 block of Litton Lane in Suffolk, lying on the ground. Police say the victim appeared to have suffered from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Medics transported Sharpe to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. He died Monday morning at the hospital.

Police say there is no suspect information or description at this time. Authorities are still investigating.
