Car runs red light, hits Newport News school bus in Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A motorist ran a red light and hit a Newport News School bus at the intersection of Armistead Avenue and Mercury Boulevard in Hampton Friday morning.

Hampton disptchers tell WAVY.com they received call about the accident around 6:25 a.m.

Police spokesperson Ashley Jenrette says the bus was heading west on Mercury, when the driver tried to make a left-hand turn onto Armistead and was hit by a Volkswagen traveling east on Mercury.

According to police, the Volkswagen was continuing through a red light when the collision occurred. No injuries were reported.

Michelle Price with Newport News Schools says there was one student, a high schooler, on the bus at the time of the accident.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 36-year-old Hampton woman, has been issued a summons for failure to obey a traffic signal.
