VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A three-vehicle chain-reaction crash resulted in one vehicle hitting a tree and catching fire on Indian River Road Thursday morning.

According to Virginia Beach Police dispatchers, the call came in around 7:45 a.m. for emergency crews to respond to the intersection near I-64.

Jimmy Cason with Virginia Beach Police says one car was heading north on Indian River, and the driver didn’t realize that traffic was stopped.

The driver moved to the left, and hit a another car, causing a chain reaction.

This caused a  second vehicle to hit another car — which then caused the third car to go off the road, hit a tree and catch fire.

The driver of the third car, a man, was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Images from WAVY viewers show smoke and flames coming from a red car that crashed into a tree in the median. The scene has cleared.

Cason says the driver of the first car has been charged with unsafe lane change.
