Fire destroys home on 31st Street in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Crews battled a house fire in the 1100 block of 31st Street, Wednesday afternoon.

Dispatch says the emergency call came in around 1:40 p.m. According to the Newport News Fire Department, firefighters arrived on the scene and saw heavy smoke coming from the second floor.

Battalion Chief Steven Pincus tweeted around 2:12 p.m. that crews had the fire under control.

No one was home at the time and no injuries were reported.

Due to the damage, the house is declared condemned.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
