PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Hill’s Child Care, which has been open for decades, is now closed.
The doors were abruptly shut on Monday, and the closing left employees jobless and parents scrambling to find new child care.
“What’s going on,” parent Falicia Hall asked.
Hall just had to see it for herself; she had to make sure her son Devon’s daycare was closed.
“I’m disappointed, because my kids love going here,” Hall added. “They love it. I’m lost for words.”
Devon wasn’t at the daycare facility on Elliott Avenue Monday when parents and employees were told the doors were shutting.
“They told me they weren’t closing down,” Hall said. “That’s what they told me.”
Tuesday the building is dark and the gates around the property chained up tight.
“Now I’m trying to find somewhere for my son to go,” Hall added. “I have to work.”
10 On Your Side tried to find out why the family run day care is closed after 25 years. It appears Milton Hill, who lives in Maryland, wanted to keep it open, but his sister Betina had a different view. Hill told 10 On Your Side it’s a long story, but the center closed because of a family dispute.
Parents say the closure caught them by surprise.
“They had graduation on the 3rd of June so I’m confused,” Hall said.
Hall is now scrambling to find new care for her son. As well as dozens of other parents who find themselves in the same boat.
“They’ve never closed unless it was a holiday,” she added.
Employees said they were concerned that they would not get their last paychecks. Hill says he understands the concerns and that the employees will be paid in full.
