NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — City Council voted against a land use change that would have help bring a Wegmans grocery store to the area.
On Monday, the developer of the proposed plan was asking the city to push back its vote. The company wanted more time as they worked to address concerns.
During comments from Tuesday evening’s meeting, neighbors brought up potential traffic issues the high-end grocery store could bring to the Kiln Creek area, near the airport.
People worried about an increase in traffic to an already busy area. However, there was a small group of people who supported bringing a new grocery store to the neighborhood.
While council members voted against the land use proposal Tuesday, they did push back a rezoning vote until a June meeting, meaning the proposal is not dead yet.
