Man takes life at a Virginia Beach police station following shooting

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Police are investigating a double shooting that started at 314 16th Street, Monday evening.

Police dispatch confirmed that the emergency call came in at 4:51 p.m. According to police, when officers arrived to the scene, they found a woman suffering from a gunshot to the leg in the La CoQuille Apartment Complex.

“It sounded like scary screaming, like girls screaming and crying,” said Maddie Loeffler, a resident of the complex.

Loeffler and another nearby resident said the suspect was driving a gold Ford Ranger. After he shot the woman in the leg, they said the man drove erratically through the small parking lot, striking several vehicles on his way out.

Residents said a man in the parking lot fired a shot at the suspect in self-defense.

“A person shot at him, and then he sped fully out of the parking lot, and shot up 16th street,” said a neighbor, who didn’t want his name used.

WAVY.com did speak with the man who fired the shot at the suspect in the parking lot. He said, he was trying to stop the suspect from getting away. He also said there were children nearby when the initial shooting happened.

A few minutes later, a man matching the description of the shooter, arrived at the 2nd Police Precinct. The man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the parking lot, according to police. A gold Ford Ranger was later towed from the parking lot.

The woman was taken to the hospital for her injuries.

At this time, police say they are still investigating the victim and suspect’s relationship. Neighbors said the two know each other and that it is a domestic situation.

The case remains under investigation.
