PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A suspected DUI driver has been charged after he crashed into the back of a police car early Monday morning on High Street.

McAllen Mathurin, 45, was charged with DUI following Monday’s crash.

The crash happened around 3:10 a.m. near the intersection of High Street and Twine Avenue, in front of a Family Dollar.

Detective Misty Holley with Portsmouth Police told WAVY.com the police cruiser was in the area looking for two suspects who allegedly robbed a female at gunpoint, when it was hit from behind by a black Dodge Charger.

Both the officer and the male driver of the Dodge Charger received minor injuries in the crash. The officer was treated at the scene, while the driver of the Charger — now identified as Mathurin — was taken to the hospital.

The medics who transported him allege he had passed them earlier on High Street traveling at a high rate of speed.
