DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Counselors will be on hand Monday morning at a Dayton elementary school after a second grader was stabbed by a stranger.

The stabbing happened Friday at the World of Wonder at Residence Park School in Dayton.

As students return to school for the first time since the incident, the school has brought in its crisis response team to help both students and staff cope with what happened.

Friday, witnesses said a man between 18 and 20 years old stabbed a 7-year-old while she was playing on the swings at recess.

The school was immediately placed on lock-down for the safety of the other students.

The suspect then took off running.

“We had some of our detectives and officers immediately canvassing the area,” said Lt. Eric Henderson of the Dayton Police Department. “We also contacted one of our K9 officers to come in and also attempt to track.”

Police said it’s unclear if the attack was targeted.

The student was taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital with critical injuries, according to police.

Officials are still looking for a suspect. If you have any information that could help, call Crime Stoppers at 937-222-7867.
