Volunteers take part in oyster reef project at Chincoteague

CHINCOTEAGUE ISLAND, Va. (WAVY) – Volunteers are doing their part to combat the effects of sea level rise at Chincoteague Island.

The Nature Conservancy organized an effort in Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in building oyster reefs.

The goal is to restoring coastal areas pummeled by Hurricane Sandy, while also looking to the future to prevent flooding.

Volunteers, including ODU students, lined the Assateague Bay with special materials to fortify the shoreline. The project creates a place for oysters to grow and create a barrier reef, stopping erosion.

Organizers hope this can create safer coastal communities for decades to come.
