NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The U.S.Marshals and Virginia State Police accounted for more than 150 registered sex offenders in the Hampton Roads area in a recent cooperative operation.
Operation Check and Balance is a semi-annual effort by law enforcement to ensure that registered offenders are living and working at the correct address, according to the U.S. Marshals.
Officials conducted the checks on April 23, along with help from localities including Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg and Chesapeake.
The Marshals say that 165 of nearly 200 offenders were deemed compliant in the April 23 operation. Virginia State Police are continuing to investigate 22 cases of non-verified offenders.
U.S. Marshal Robert Mathieson said, “This operation was very successful and sends a loud and clear message that sex offenders in our area will be accounted for and held responsible if they violate registration requirements.”
