Petition growing in support of removed Landstown HS principal

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Support is growing for a principal who was stripped of his position last week.

Dr. Brian Matney was placed on leave from his position at Landstown High School. Now many students and neighbors have signed an online petition saying they want him back.

10 On Your Side has asked school board officials repeatedly for information about why Dr. Matney was suddenly removed from school grounds, his photo even taken off the school website, there has yet to be an answer. Matney’s attorney tells 10 On Your Side that he hasn’t even been told why the principal was removed.

10 On Your Side also tried to ask the school board what lead to Matney’s removal. The board said it is a personnel matter, and that they will continue to investigate.

Sources have said that it could be because of complaints from faculty about how they are treated.

Since the petition has gone live, it has gained more than 1,500 signatures. One comment on the petition, that has gained a lot of support, is from someone who claims to be a teacher.

The comment read:

As a faculty member at LHS, I will tell you that the vast majority of us were shocked and confused to hear that Landstown administration was under investigation.

Some of us are afraid to speak publicly but I can tell you we want Dr. Matney back more than anything.

The petition organizers plan to take the signatures to the board, the superintendent and human resources.
