PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – A new food truck of sorts was unveiled in Portsmouth Monday.
It is a mobile food pantry, made possible thanks to the PRA Group’s five-year commitment of $150,000 to purchase the new refrigerated truck.
It was dedicated Monday to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, at an event at Parkview Elementary School.
The giving began right away, with the distribution of pre-packaged bags of canned goods, fresh produce, frozen foods and bakery items to those in need.
“Through our efforts we provide food to 183,000 people a year, 19 million pounds of food, 16 million meals,” said CEO Ruth Nichols.
The 25-foot refrigerated trailer has a 40,000 pound capacity. It will support the Foodbank’s food rescue program, collecting prepared and perishable food from area grocery stores, restaurants and caterers to give to the hungry.
