One year since William Chapman was killed by police

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – It’s been one year since 18-year-old William Chapman was shot and killed in a Walmart parking lot. On Friday, friends and family gathered at that parking lot to remember Chapman.

Former police officer Stephen Rankin is charged with Chapman’s murder.

According to investigators, Chapman was suspected shoplifted at the store. Security then alerted police of an alleged shoplifter leaving the store, and that’s when Rankin approached Chapman.

According to witnesses, the two started to struggle, and at some point, Rankin shot Chapman, who was not armed. Rankin called for medical rescue but Chapman died in the parking lot.

Rankin is charged with first degree murder.

In the past, Chapman’s family has said they are grateful the case is moving forward. They’ve defended him, saying shoplifting would not have been in his character.

Rankin is set to stand trial in August.
