NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Officers went door-to-door in an East Ocean View neighborhood Wednesday night asking people not to start their cars, while crews worked to contain a gas leak.
Dispatchers received the first call about the leak at 7:50 p.m., from someone who smelled natural gas in the area.
Crews determined the leak came from a manhole following an underground rupture.
According to Battalion Chief Brandon Dommel with Norfolk Fire-Rescue, no residences were affected by the leak so people were able cook and use heat in their homes.
Virginia Natural Gas responded to the scene to secure the leak.
E. Ocean View Avenue between Grove Avenue and Inlet Road was closed for several hours while crews made repairs. Police issued an update at 6 a.m. Thursday saying all roads reopened.
