NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A mother being charged with abducting her own daughter is back out of jail, after police in Chesapeake arrested her Tuesday afternoon.
Newport News Police issued a felony arrest warrant for Imani Cogdell, 20, after her daughter’s aunt reported the child missing Monday. The aunt has primary custody of 23-month-old Za’kiylah Ashlock, but Cogdell has visitation rights.
Investigators say Cogdell picked her daughter up March 13, but never returned. They did not say why the girl’s aunt waited a month to report her missing, except that she did not believe the child was in danger.
Cogdell called investigators Tuesday afternoon to say that she would turn herself in to Newport News Police, but was arrested in Chesapeake around the same time she called invesigators, according to a police spokesperson.
Investigators say Chesapeake Police arrested her at a home in the 4100 block of Sloop Trail after they were called to the residence.
Cogdell posted a $1,500 bond.
The child was not hurt and is back in her aunt’s care, according to police.
