Norfolk State athletes try out for NASCAR pit crew

NORFOLK (WAVY) – Drenched in sweat, Lamar Neal said the workout he just put himself through at Joe Echolls Hall reminded him of the start of football camp.

But the former Ocean Lakes High School and Norfolk State University linebacker wasn’t performing in front of scouts from any of the 32 NFL teams.

Neal, along with Quinta Funderburk (Oscar Smith High School, Chesapeake), Deshaun Thompson and former NSU women’s basketball player Dehanna Daniels out of Salem High School in Virginia Beach are all trying their hand at making a NASCAR pit crew.

Phil Horton, a pit crew coach for NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity Program, is traveling the country, looking for 20 athletes who will compete at the program’s pit crew combine in Charlotte, NC.

Of those 20, ten will be selected as part of the program’s developmental team.
