Portsmouth councilman pleads ‘no contest’ to traffic violation

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Councilman Danny Meeks pleaded no contest Tuesday to an impeding traffic charge.

Councilman Meeks was pulled over in December of 2015 by Portsmouth Police for violations involving his vehicle. The incident took place near the intersection Duke and Maple Streets.

A Portsmouth police officer stopped Meeks and cited him for “impeding traffic – stopped in roadway”, according to court papers. A judge accepted Meeks plea of no contest and also ruled that if Meeks keeps a clean record for six months, that traffic violation will be dropped.

Meeks told 10 On Your Side in February that he did not like the way the officer spoke to the citizen who had stopped Meeks.

“I was only upset because of the way the officer approached the citizen,” Meeks said in February. “The citizen had stopped me in the middle of the street because he had a concern.”

The judge also dismissed an additional violation of improper display of a license plate.
