16 displaced after fire at Chesapeake senior complex

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A fire has destroyed the side of a senior apartment complex in Chesapeake that occurred Monday afternoon.

Crews were dispatched to the 1900 block of Robert Hall Boulevard at 1:43 p.m., and had the fire under control at 2:04 p.m. most of the fire damage was contained to the exterior of the building. Electricity and water had to be shut-off to the entire building, which contained 15 apartment units.

One woman was transported to the hospital after experiencing breathing trouble. Another woman was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, but declined transport to the hospital.

16 people are displaced due to the damage. The Red Cross is assisting with 11 of the displaced, the rest have made their own arrangements.

Officials tweeted a picture of the damaged building after crews had the fire under control.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
