Neighbor removes backyard pool after Virginia Beach toddler’s death

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Homeowner Kevin Dillard was brought to tears Saturday morning after he says he came home Friday night to learn police found a toddler inside his backyard pool.

“I am devastated,” Dillard said.

Dillard told WAVY.com he started working around 8 a.m. Saturday to dissemble the above ground pool piece-by-piece.

“I couldn’t imagine leaving [the pool] up,” said Dillard.

Detectives arrived to the 1800 block of Old Ridge Road Friday night around 7 p.m. in response to a missing child. The child was found about 20 minutes later in Dillard’s pool, according to investigators.

The child was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police are not identifying the victim or her exact age, but said that she was a toddler. The young girl was reportedly under the care of her grandmother at the time. People standing in the family’s yard on Friday night had no comment.

An investigator told 10 On Your Side that the neighbor’s pool was fenced, but there was a hole in the fence, allowing access. The hole was caused by recent damage, police said.

Police do not believe the death is suspicious. No one had been charged as of Friday night.
