Walgreens employees tackle suspect during attempted robbery

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Two employees at a Walgreens on Jefferson Avenue tackled a man during an attempted robbery Monday morning.

Officers received a call about an attempted robbery in progress at 5:50 a.m. A man reportedly entered the store at 3:40 a.m., pointed a handgun at one employee and force them to the back of the store.

The man lowered his weapon while he tried to zip-tie the hands of the employees. During this, police say the employees tackled the man and restrained him until officers arrived.

The man — identified as 38-year-old Ronald Farmer — is facing charges including abduction by force, intimidation or deception and use of a fire arm in commission of a felony.

Police say the weapon Farmer used in the attempted robbery was a replica handgun.

Farmer is currently being held at Newport News City Jail.
