HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — One person is dead following a crash involving a school bus in Hampton.

Police said a Hampton City Schools bus and a Chevrolet Malibu collided at the intersection of Settlers Landing/ West Queen Street and West Pembroke Avenue around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The school bus was reportedly driving north on Settlers Landing and attempted to turn left onto West Pembroke, as the Malibu was driving south on Settlers Landing. The two collided within the intersection.

No students were on board.

The woman driving the bus was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The woman behind the wheel of the Malibu, 60-year-old Gloria J. Ford, was also taken to the hospital, and later pronounced dead. A Nightingale was initially called for her, but upon further assessment, she was not airlifted.

“The only thing I can say is right now my heart goes out to the family of the individual that was lost in this car,” said Jena Massey, who stopped by the scene. She wanted to make sure that her nieces and nephews weren’t on the school bus.

“I just pray for strength, peace,” she said.  “There’s nothing worse than an unanticipated death.”

No one else was involved or hurt in the crash.

Police shut the intersection down for several hours.

Investigators are working to determine which driver was at fault. The intersection does not have surveillance cameras.
