Man with bike charged in BayPort Credit Union attempted robbery

Gregory Bentley was caught on his bike hours after the robbery.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police say they’ve tracked down the man who tried to rob a BayPort Credit Union on Tuesday.

The attempted robbery happened around 11 a.m., when a man went up a bank teller and said he had a gun, but never showed one.

The suspect left the area on a bicycle before getting any money.

A few hours later, officers detained 49-year-old Gregory Bentley, who was with his bicycle at the corner of Culpepper Avenue and Warwick Boulevard.

Bentley was identified by a witness, and was taken to police headquarters. He has been charged with attempted robbery.
