NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News gang member will spend 34 years in prison for a racketeering conspiracy.

Douglas Ashby, 29, was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to charges back in November 2015.

According to court documents, Ashby was a member of the Newport News street gang “Thug Relations.”

Prosecutors say the gang was responsible for the distribution of marijuana and crack cocaine.

The Department of Justice says Ashby admitted his involvement in a murder and participated in shootings, home invasions and attempted robberies.

His sentence will run consecutive to a 10 year sentence on an earlier federal firearms conviction.
