NORFOLK Va. (WAVY) — Norfolk Police have identified a man who died in an early morning shooting as 28-year-old Phillip Spell of Richmond.
Cpl. Melinda Wray with Norfolk Police said officers received a call for a shooting in the 800 block of Fremont Street, near O’Keefe Street, around 4:31 a.m.
Responding officers found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he later died.
Neighbor Shelton Clark said he did not know the victim, but heard the shooting.
“When I heard the gunshots, it was like boom, boom, boom. I said, “Wow, that was kind of close,” you know? I ain’t seen nobody. I walked out to the curb, there’s a guy laying down there, so I say, ‘He must be dead,’ and I looked at him, and I called the paramedics,” he said.
Clark and his mother have lived in the Olde Huntersville neighborhood for more than 50 years.
“This is all they do. Walk the street and you might hear somebody say, ‘Somebody got shot down on the other end,'” she said.
“The police, they do their job. They’re walking and everything, up in the neighborhood, you know…It’s sad. You got little kids that got to go to school and you come out of your house 6 a.m. to go and catch the school bus and see somebody gunned down,” Shelton Clark said.
Spell’s body has been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Officers were on the scene for several hours Thursday morning investigating the area.
Police have not released a description of the suspect. Anyone with information can contact the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP (1-888-562-5887).
