Young CNU women’s hoops team heads to NCAA tournament

NEWPORT NEWS (WAVY)- Christopher Newport University women’s basketball is headed to the NCAA tournament for the first time in two years.

The Captains (22-4) earned an at-large bid, even after falling in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament semifinals. But ask head coach Bill Broderick whether or not he expected this kind of a season from this particular team, he’ll say, “No chance I thought that would happen.”

There’s no lack of talent with his team, but rather experience. All five CNU starters are sophomores, the next three off the bench are also sophomores, and after that…three freshman.

“We probably have the youngest team in the tournament,” said Broderick.

They’ll head to Allentown, Penn. for their first round test.
