Parents take child to hospital after he was shot in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Police responded to a call made about mother who drove her 7-year-old son to Maryview Medical Center because of a gunshot wound on Sunday morning.

Emergency dispatchers received the call at 10:40 a.m for a gunshot victim in 700 block of Lancer Drive. It was revealed that a 7-year-old boy was playing with an unsecured firearm and accidentally shot himself in the hand in his home according to Detective Misty Holly.

The boy was taken to Maryview Medical Center and transported to Children Hospital of the King’s and Daughter’s a short time later.

His injuries are non-life-threatening and the investigation is still ongoing. Charges are pending in this case.
