Fire at the Freedom Outreach Center in Newport News

The fire was contained to the area of the Freedom Outreach Center

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Firefighters responded to a fire at a commercial building in the 1700 block of Jefferson Avenue Sunday afternoon.

According to NNFD PIO Chief Carper, emergency crews arrived on the scene at 1:46 p.m. and declared the fire under control at 2:10 p.m. The one person in the building at the time made it out safely.

No injuries were reported.

Three businesses are inside of the commercial building, the fire was on the roof area of the Freedom Outreach Center. An investigation revealed, that the fire was caused by workers that were hot patching the roof.

According to fire investigators, the building will not have to be condemned and no businesses will be displaced from the fire.
