Chesapeake man waits in line for year supply of doughnuts

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A man plans to spend four days waiting outside a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts location to win free doughnuts for a year.

Larry Ressler, 71, started waiting outside the new Krispy Kreme on North Battlefield Boulevard around 4:30 a.m. Friday.

“I was bullied into it,” said Ressler. “I see no challenge. My children and grand children dared me, and I had to take them up on it.”

Krispy Kreme tells WAVY.com the first person in line will win one dozen free doughnuts a week for a year. The next 99 customers will win a dozen free doughnuts every month for a year.

“I’ve loved Krispy Kreme all my life,” he said. “It’s one of the things I would enjoy.”

10 On Your Side checked in with the retired construction superintendent on Saturday morning. He says he got about four hours of sleep and has been using a portable restroom in the parking lot when needed.

Ressler has a reclining chair set up outside the front entrance of the newly-constructed store. He has a blanket for warmth and a reading device to keep him busy.

“It’s chilly, but I’ve got a lot of support. A lot of people are coming by,” said Ressler. “A lot of people bringing food, coffee, drinks.”

He says employees in the store are already providing him free coffee and doughnuts throughout the day.

The new location at 1444 N. Battlefield Boulevard opens at 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
