Newport News apartment condemned in early morning fire

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News firefighters battled a fire at an apartment building on Big Forrest Court Wednesday morning.

Fire crews responded to the 500 block of Big Forrest Ct., Denbigh Section of the city, just before 6 a.m. and found a fire on a third floor balcony, according to a fire department spokesman.

Emergency dispatchers were alerted by a newspaper delivery person around 5:55 a.m., who reported seeing flames on the third floor balcony.

The fire was brought under control after 15 minutes and one person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. They were not taken to the hospital.

Battalion Chief J. Douglas Carper with the Newport News Department tells WAVY.com some materials on the balcony caught fire and the cause is under investigation.

Newport News Fire Chief Stephen C. Pincus says the apartment was condemned. The cause of fire has been attributed to an electrical problem.

A portion of the building was evacuated while crews fought the fire, according to emergency dispatchers.
