VIRGINIA BEACH (WAVY) – Princess Anne High School has won four of the last seven 5A state championships in girls basketball. Head coach Darnell Dozier, now in his 21st season, recognizes the “bullseye’s gonna get bigger.”
Even for the Cavaliers (24-2) nothing is a given heading into the state championship, but with players like Gadiva Hubbard, it certainly makes critical moments a little easier to game plan for. When asked where Hubbard ranks all-time in PA history, Dozier chuckled, thinking his answer might spur a little debate from a few of his many past stars.
He did, however, clarify, “[Hubbard]’s top five. I can say that.”
Hubbard has been a star since she first put on a Cavaliers jersey. A four-star recruit for most of her career, she’s averaged 18 points per game over her senior season, and will play Division I ball at the University of Minnesota next season. But before she heads to Minneapolis, she’s after another piece of hardware.
“Season’s almost over and we want to finish out with a bang,” said Hubbard.
