Sportswrap Vault: 1982, ODU basketball attempts image makeover

(WAVY) — While Old Dominion figures out where to build a new football stadium, in 1982 ODU officials felt that the men’s basketball team was not attracting enough fans to its home court, the 10,000 seat Norfolk Scope.

The University hired a marketing firm to try and figure out a way to promote the program better. Part of the results included the Big Blue Beast television commercials, a student fee that would allow entry to all basketball games, and a shuttle to transport students from campus to downtown Norfolk.

Within 20 years, Old Dominion would abandon Scope for its current home on Hampton Blvd., the Ted Constant Center.
