TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — The mystery is over. We now know the names of the lucky Florida winners who purchased a ticket worth $528.6 million in the historic $1.5 billion Powerball drawing on Jan. 13.

Melbourne residents Maureen Smith, 70, and David Kaltschmindd, 55, revealed on Wednesday that they are Florida’s mystery Powerball winners. The couple spoke at a news conference held at Florida Lottery headquarters in Tallahassee.

Smith said she picked the lottery numbers herself and they were numbers that she had been playing off and on for the last 30 years. They did not watch the lottery drawing live and did not realize they won until the next morning.

“I knew they were my numbers… we didn’t believe it,” said Smith.

“I checked the ticket and everything matched up. I said ‘She’s messing with me’,” said Kaltschmindd.

They purchased the ticket at the Publix located at Highway A1A in Melbourne Beach.

The couple said they spent $3 on the winning ticket and managed to keep their big win a secret for more than a month.

“We just keep quiet and acted normal,” said Smith, who referred to Publix as her “second home”.

Kaltschmindd said his co-workers suspected that he won when he showed up late to work the day after the winning numbers were announced, but he managed to keep them in the dark about the big win.

Winning a share of the historic Powerball jackpot has already impacted the couple’s lives.  Kaltschmindd said he’s lost ten pounds since learning they won.

Smith realizes that life will never be the same. It’s very stressful, it’s new,” said Smith. “We’re no longer in a quiet place, which I’m going to miss,” she added. “I’m afraid it’s going to make me less friendly.”

Kaltschmindd is a manufacturing engineer and says he plans to retire now. Smith said she is a homemaker.

The couple claimed their one-third share in the $1.5 billion Powerball Jackpot under the Nickel 95 Trust of which they are trustees. They will receive their winnings in a one-time, lump sum payment in the amount of $327,835,077.79

The winning numbers from the January 13 drawing were 4-8-19-27-34 and the Powerball was 10. Publix received $100,000 for selling the jackpot-winning ticket.
