Woman in N.C. adopts pit bull; the dog kills her weeks later

PERQUIMANS COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) – A pit bull terrier attacked and killed a Perquimans County woman two weeks after she adopted the dog.

Thursday in Snug Harbor, N.C., Debbie Brown took the same trip down the street to her daughter Suzanne Story’s home she took many times before.

“We were together about every day, if we weren’t together we were talking on the phone,” Brown said as she sighed.

Brown told 10 On Your Side her daughter loved animals, and two weeks ago Story added a fifth dog to the house, a pit bull named Buddy. Thursday as her mother fought through the grief, she said she never saw the dog.

“She told me that there was an ad in a local paper for a dog, the ad said it was “easy-going” and good with kids,” Brown said.

The dog proved to be anything but easy-going. Wednesday afternoon Story went to clean the dog’s cage and Buddy turned violent. Perquimans County Sheriff, Eric Tilley, sent his deputies out to check on Story.

“She (Story) had lacerations about the neck and the face area,” Sheriff Tilley described. “It took approximately five to seven minutes to control the dog.”

By the time medics got to the home, time had nearly run out.

“She didn’t die until the medics left here with her. They were going to put her on the helicopter, and when they put her on the helicopter she had already died,” Brown said.

Brown told 10 On Your Side the rest of the family has pulled together. They’ll try to salvage what they can for Story’s two daughters, but don’t know where to turn to next.

“We want to find the people that gave her the dog, and told her it was “good-natured” and everything, we’d like to find that out,” Brown said.

10 On Your Side called a phone number of the family that gave up the dog, but it was a wrong number.

The dog that killed Story was put down Thursday morning.
