NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News Police have arrested a man from North Dakota on child neglect and malicious wounding charges following an investigation lasting more thana year.
Nathan Andrew Horn, 24, is facing the charges for alleged abuse that happened in September 2014.
Investigators say police were referred by Child Protective Services about a 3-year-old Newport News boy who had what appeared to be two significant burns.
“While taking a history regarding the burn, attending medical personnel became suspicious of the history provided and determined that the burns were ‘more consistent with clamping’ of a hot iron,” according to court documents filed in Newport News Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
The child had reportedly been left with his mother’s boyfriend, later identified as Horn, while she was at work around Sept. 10 and 11, 2014. Horn allegedly told the mother the child’s burns were accidental.
Investigators say neither the mother nor Horn took the boy to the hospital for the burns. A relative took him for treatment after seeing the burns several days after the alleged incident.
“Horn told [the boy’s mother] that he had been straitening the victim’s hair with a flat iron, and ‘somehow [the victim’s] arm dragged through the iron.”
Court papers say immediately following the incident, Horn relocated Minot, North Dakota.
In the midst of the investigation, court papers say Horn texted the boy’s mother several times and said, in part, “If you only knew everything that happened … that look of fear he had is something that I will always remember.”
The child has been placed in the care of a relative.
Horn was extradited back to Newport News on Feb. 5 and is currently being held at Newport News City Jail without bond.
