VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Usually a nice hot meal on a cold day will put a smile on anyone’s face, however, when news spread that yet another Virginia Beach landmark was closing its doors, folks had to come and say goodbye.
“The fact that it’s been here for so long, and so many people have been here and it’s not gonna be here anymore kinda makes me sad,” said customer Jackie Sears. “I wanted to come here before it closed down.”
Mary Ellen and Charles Rehpelz opened the restaurant in 1946. Charlie’s is the oldest restaurant on Shore Drive.
“We’ve eaten here for several years, many years going back to the 60’s, and we’re gonna miss it, we really are,” said customer Jack Chapman. “There’s no question about it.”
The owners tell 10 On Your Side they are closing down due to the economy.
Charlie’s doors officially close Sunday.
