MOYOCK, N.C. (WAVY) – Dozens of loved ones gathered on Thursday night to honor a 9-year-old boy who was killed in a crash.
Lucas Ballard, of Moyock, died Monday after a pickup truck crashed into his family’s minivan in Norfolk.
On Thursday night, friends, family members, teachers and community members held a vigil for the boy at Moyock Elementary School, where he had been a student.
“It makes me feel blessed that he has been able to touch so many more people,” his grandmother, Minnie Ballard-Miller, told 10 On Your Side. “He was an amazing little boy.”
Ballard-Miller said that her grandson was a sweet and compassionate little boy who loved the outdoors.
As a toddler, he was reportedly diagnosed with skin cancer, and soldiered on.
“He cared more about other people than himself,” Ballard-Miller said.
Loved ones poured into the school’s cafeteria, where they sang songs and prayed. The vigil had originally been scheduled to take place on the soccer field, but was moved indoors due to the rain.
The rain momentarily let up as supporters briefly moved outdoors to release balloons and light candles.
“This child will never, ever be forgotten,” said Ballard-Miller. “Not only by us, but this community right here. He will never be forgotten.”
