Vigil for 9-year-old killed in crash scheduled for tonight

WAVY News 10

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The family of 9-year-old Lucas Ballard is asking for prayers and help after an accident took his life Monday night.

Ballard was in a car when it was hit on West 27th Street and Llewellyn Avenue in Norfolk. His best friend, 7-year-old Keion McClenny, survived the crash and is recovering at home.

Family and friends will gather tonight at the Moyock Elementary School soccer field to remember Lucas’ young life.

The family has also set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral costs and hospital bills.

On the day of the crash, police say a pickup collided with the minivan Ballard and McClenny were riding in.

According to investigators, the impact from the crash threw the two young boys from the vehicle. Paramedics rushed them and the woman who was driving to the hospital.

Lucas Ballard was pronounced dead that night.

Police say the woman driving the minivan, the pick-up driver and his only passenger are expected to recover.

The Commonwealth’s Attorney has not decided if any charges will be filed in this case.

Tonight’s vigil is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
