PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The crew for the Coast Guard Cutter Bear returned home Thursday after a month-long patrol in the Western Caribbean Sea.

The Cutter Bear crew spent the month coordinating with multiple countries in the central Caribbean, including the Bahamas, Haiti and Cuba, to help stem the flow of drugs into the country and prevent the flow of illegal migration in the Caribbean.

The Cutter Bear crew also helped the Royal Bahamian Police Force seize more than 21 kg of contraband illegally smuggled between countries, along with repatriating five Cubans, and deterring the unsafe and illegal transits of many Haitian migrants.

Two Belgian sailors were also saved after being stranded south of Cuba. After working with the Cuban Border Guard, they ensured the sailing vessel made it to shore for repairs.

The Bear is homeported in Portsmouth.
