2 Norfolk men freed in 2014 New Year’s Day double-murder

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Two Norfolk men charged with killing two people on New Year’s Day 2014 were freed of charges accusing them of a double-murder.

Marcus Deering, 22, and Melvin Alston, 32, were both shot and killed in the intersection of the 400 block of Berkley Avenue, near Rockingham Street on January 1, 2014.

Steven Carter Jones III was found not guilty on Feb. 3 of seven felonies, including two counts of first-degree murder and one count of malicious wounding in this case.

Garrick Alexander Williams had the same charges dismissed by the judge on Feb. 2 after the defense attorney made a motion to strike the charges against the defendant after the case was presented and before the jury got the case for deliberation.

The jury trial began on February 1 and wrapped up on February 3.
