NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Elizabeth River Tunnels Project team has announced that the U.S. Route 58 Midtown Tunnel will be closed the weekend of Jan. 29-Feb. 1.
The ERT Project team will be removing the pedestrian bridge on Route 58, which spans over top of the Midtown Tunnel. The removal of the existing bridge is required for new flood protection that is planned for the tunnel.
The bridge will be replaced with a new one before the project is completed.
Crews will also be using the closure for maintenance and construction work on the tunnel — including re-lamping, tide gate testing and modification to the existing barrier wall on the Norfolk side.
Motorists are being advised to use the Interstate 264 Downtown Tunnel instead. Signs for a detour will be placed around the area during this weekend’s closure.
The closure is set to take effect Friday, Jan. 29 at 8 p.m., and is scheduled to be lifted Monday, Feb. 1 at 5 a.m.
