NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A father and his 2-year-old son were taken to the hospital after a townhouse fire Thursday.

Newport News firefighters were called to a residence on Towne Square Drive, just before 5 p.m.

When crews arrived, they found smoke coming out of the first and second floor of the two-story townhouse. Firefighters say the flames were contained to the kitchen.

The father and son were able to escape the fire on their own, but complained of smoke inhalation, said firefighters. They were taken to Riverside Regional Hospital as a precaution.

The townhouse was condemned and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
