CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Seven people were injured after a car drove into a post office building in the 1400 block of North Battlefield Boulevard Monday afternoon.

Chesapeake Police Spokeswoman Kelly O’Sullivan told 10 On Your Side they received the call about the crash at 12:25 p.m. The driver reportedly drove into the building from a parking space. Police believe she stepped on the gas instead of the brake.

“She came through the glass. It was a loud noise and everyone turned around to look,” said Kristy Stevens, who was inside with her three-year-old daughter at the time.

Stevens told 10 On Your Side that the driver crashed into a display case and a wooden median.

“There were giant pieces of wood and glass flying everywhere and it was God’s grace that we didn’t get injured,” she said.

But seven others, not including the driver, were sent to a local hospital. O’Sullivan said that no one was seriously hurt.

Investigators remained on scene hours after the crash. Construction crews arrived to clean up the destruction in the afternoon. An official said that the post office is expected to re-open Tuesday morning.

This is the second time within the last two years that this post office building has been hit by a car. The last incident took place in July of 2014 — when an 80-year-old woman drove into the post office and injured one person.

Monday’s accident is currently under investigation. O’Sullivan said that the driver may face charges.
