HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) – Powerball mania is spreading as more and more people buy tickets hoping to strike it rich.
10 On Your Side wanted to paint a picture on just how much you could afford with $1.5 billion headed your way. Now, of course we have to realize that given taxes or if you choose the lump sum, you wouldn’t really win $1.5 billion. But, for the sake of some fun facts let’s go for the gusto.
A lot of people like to sell AVON cosmetics. You could buy the whole company for $1.2 billion and still have a little money left over.
The iPhone 6S Plus costs $749 without a contract. That means you could buy an iPhone for two million friends.
Locally, the city of Virginia Beach assessed the Cavalier Hotel at $34 million which means you could buy 44 of them, and in 2014, when MacArthur Center underwent an ownership change, Starwood Capital Group signed a $1.4 billion agreement. That allowed them, and if you won the lotto would make it possible for you, to buy seven malls for roughly $200 million each.
The average NFL team is worth $1.97 billion and the top two for this area would be too rich for our blood with the Redskins being valued at $2.85 billion and the Cowboys $4 billion. But if you won the lotto you could buy the Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, soon to be LA Rams, the Bengals, Lions, Raiders or the Bills.
WAVY also looked up the average cost of tuition and fees for the 2015-2016 school year for public and private colleges and found you could send over 200,000 students to get a higher education with the winnings.
And hey, if you just want to chill, you could purchase nine private islands with that money and call it a day.
