VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A Virginia Beach man will be serving five years in prison for a felony animal cruelty charge, Macie Pridgen Allen of the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office confirmed Wednesday.

Arthur Vieira, 26, was arrested and charged in June of 2015, after officers found his dog, who was later identified as “Lucky,” dead in a brush-fire in May. He pleaded guilty to the charges on Nov. 2.

The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office says Vieira made a series of false statements during several interviews with investigators — including claims that Lucky was given away on Craigslist.

Vieira received the maximum 5-year sentence on Wednesday, along with 90 days each for misdemeanor charges of obstruction of justice and improperly disposing of a companion animal.
