ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WAVY) — Traffic on U.S. Route in Isle of Wight, near Smiths Neck Road, is re-opened after a multi-vehicle crash blocked all northbound and southbound lanes Friday morning.

The accident involved an overturned tractor-trailer and five other vehicles, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya. The crash was called in at 7:22 a.m. with injuries.

Anaya said a Toyota Tacoma was traveling north on Route 17, when the driver ran a tractor-trailer off the road during a sudden lane change — causing a chain-reaction of crashes.

The driver the tractor-trailer attempted to avoid the Toyota, but lost control and overturned.

According to Anaya, the driver of the Toyota then over-corrected to avoid the tractor-trailer, hitting two other vehicles. The tractor-trailer hit two additional cars as it was over-turning.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Toyota was charged with reckless driving.
