NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Police say the tractor-trailer involved in a multi-vehicle crash on Tidewater Drive Friday afternoon may have suffered a medical condition that caused the collision.
Roland Stone, a 67-year-old Norfolk man, was found unresponsive in the cabin of the tractor-trailer. Paramedics took him to Sentara Norfok General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Shortly after 2 p.m., investigators say Stone was traveling southbound in the 6500 block of Tidewater Drive, when the truck crossed the median and went into the oncoming northbound lanes. The truck hit two vehicles in the northbound lanes, causing a chain reaction. A total of seven vehicles, including the tractor-trailer were involved in the accident.
Other minor injuries were also reported. Those patients were taken to DePaul Medical Center for evaluation.
Stone’s possible medical condition has not yet been released. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the exact cause of his death.
No one has been charged in the crash.
Tidewater Drive from Norview Avenue through Widgeon Road was closed for several hours while crews worked to clear the scene. Traffic on Interstate 64 also experienced delays because of this crash. All Tidewater Drive exits on I-64 were blocked, but have since reopened.
