HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Two adults were found dead inside a home in Hampton Wednesday in what police say was a murder-suicide.
Police went to the 1st block of Charolais Run for a welfare check at 11:15 a.m.. That’s when officers discovered the bodies of a man and a woman. They were identified as 65-year-old Richard A. Garrity and 55-year-old Barbara Ann Caton.
According to investigators, Garrity beat Caton to death, before shooting himself. They were known to each other, say police.
According to police, there were no other occupants in the home when officers arrived.
A man who lives in the neighborhood said he is related by marriage to the man in the home. The family is asking for prayers during what he said would be an awful, trying time.
Jim Raines, who lives near the scene, said it is a quiet neighborhood.
“It’s kind of unnerving that something possibly criminal could have gone on down that way. I hope not…My friend walked my dog down here last night. In fact, she went right by the house down there. She didn’t see anything,” he said.
Another man, who said he has known the woman at that home for 10 years, called her a good person and was saddened to learn of her death.
