SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Suffolk man, who identifies as a pastor, faces 26 sex crimes involving a minor.
Anthony McClain, 54, was arrested in December after a direct indictment by a grand jury. McClain was scheduled to be in court on Wednesday, but his case was continued to February. According to police, McClain faces 15 counts of aggravated sexual battery, five counts of indecent liberties with a child, and six counts of incest.
According to his website “Something God Made Ministries Community Center, Inc.,” McClain ran a ministry out of his Suffolk home on Kings Highway. His family has now relocated to North Carolina.
“I believe my husband is innocent, and I’m standing by him 100 percent,” said Deborah McClain over the phone Wednesday.
Deborah McClain says the accusations are not true and the victim in the case is lying.
“[The accuser] made these accusations that she was having sexual encounters with him,” said McClain.
WAVY.com will not identify information about the victim other than she was under the age of 18 and known to the suspect.
Within 80 pages of court documents in the Suffolk Circuit Court’s Clerk’s Office, WAVY.com learned the charges stem from incidents that started in April 2015 and ended August 4, 2015 when police were called to McClain’s house.
Interviews with a detective on Aug. 4 reveal the pastor denied the claims at first. In a second interview, completed less than 30 minutes after the first interview, McClain admitted to the sexual relationship.
In one interview he said, “I wanted to say that I did have sexual relationships with her, but it was consensual and she initiated it.”
Deborah McClain said she did not know of any sort of confession.
“If I thought for one second he was guilty I would have nothing else to do with him, trust me,” said McClain.
