MANTEO, N.C. (WAVY) — A former teacher at Manteo High School has been indicted on a sexual offense charge.

Andrew Womble, District Attorney for Dare County and the northeast corner of North Carolina, tells WAVY that 27-year-old Ryan S. Garrott was indicted Monday on one count of sex offense with a student.

Womble says that the victim was a female senior at Manteo High School, and was 18-years-old at the time. The alleged offense occurred in May of 2015.

Garrott is out of the country right now, and a court date will not be set until he is served with the indictment, according to Womble.

Per the North Carolina State Code, if a teacher is 4 years or more older at the same school, then it is a felony.

If found guilty, Garrott could face a maximum punishment of 47 months for the felony charge.
